The Crows’ Omen is the result of an enduring desire to write a story about southeastern Kansas, where I was raised, and to carry on the rich storytelling tradition that is so deeply woven into the people there—many of whom are descendants of immigrants who came to the United States long ago to carve out better lives. Though the era of deep shaft mines has faded into history, tales of yesteryear still abide, kept alive by families and friends who continue to share stories of loved ones long departed. While the cultural heritage of the area was inspiring on its own, I would like to recognize the historical sources that inspired so many parts of the novel. Below are the resources I relied upon the most. Thankfully, they are being preserved in a manner that allows all of us to enjoy and learn from them still today.
